Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, which dog breed to pick?

The house is currently dogless. Such a weird empty space with no snores, sighs, grunts, crunches of bones or wagging tails. Odd to not drop a bowl of food, do potty breaks, share snacks or having a walking companion, since there has always been a dog in my life since 2006.

Since we are waiting until the summer break to pick a dog, there is ample times to think about which breed to pick.

Here are options we’re considering:

  • Rottweiler
    – Owned & love the breed! (Ought to hear me squeal with delight in meeting or seeing a rottie…)
    – Strong willed, aloof with strangers, they can be total doofuses and very loving if treated well
    – Not a dog for everyone, rotties need leaders and ample socialization – lack of can lend towards a pushy, naughty adult
    – They work well in family dynamics, though being big they can knock over children
    – Find as a rescue or from a breeder who focuses on temperament vs bulk and head size

  • Pitbull
    – Owned and love the breed!
    – Pitbull isn’t actually a breed! The actual breeds are: American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier & Staffordshire Terriers
    – Happy, loving, laid back, smart, people lovers
    – They have a tendency towards dog aggression and reactivity to other dogs, can be curbed with ample socialization & training
    – Great for hiking and lounging buddies, may not be great in social situations with other dogs (depends on the dog)
    – Opt for a rescue as pitties & pittie mixes tend to make up a large amount of puppies and dogs found in shelters

  • German Shepherd
    – would be a new to me breed
    – they are smart, active, strong, protective, a great companion for all activities
    – tend to be shedders and blow out their coats twice a year (dog hair doesn’t bother me)
    – need ample training and socialization to be a well adjusted dog – love to have a job
    – can be a bit nippy & bitey (can be corrected with training) – this comes from them being HERDING dogs!
    – Adopt (often many shepherd mix dogs available in shelters, sometimes purebreds) or find a reputable breeder

  • Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
    – new to me breed
    – smart, watchful, happy, friendly, talkative, chill to moderately active
    – can be stubborn and require a strong leader
    – In the same family as the Bernese Mountain Dog
    – BIG dog, can weigh easily over 100 lbs but they hardly drool!
    – Strong & love to pull, they were bred for general farm work from watchdog to cart pulling
    – Have a double coat and shed, though less than huskies, labs and shepherds are prone to
    – Long duration for house training, could take up to 6 months
    – Very rare to find in rescue, breeders often have long wait lists

  • Mutt from a shelter
    – super variable as per what’s at the shelter though I would avoid: super high energy dogs, most small dogs, doodles, labs & lab mixes, huskies
    – I have a mega soft spot for pitties, pittie mixes and shepherd mixes
    – The ideal age range would be puppy to a 2 year old dog

Eenie, meenie, miny, mo… I don’t know!

Having had a rottie and pittie in the past, they make the list though I’d like to have something a little different. Kris’s son LOVES german shepherds, but I’d like to wait a little before adding a shepherd into our family so the two can grow and train together.

Tons of research into Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and I found myself falling in love with the breed. Their look, their personalities, a laid back but fun loving dog with a sleek coat (Berners are too fluffy for my taste, plus they’re rather short lived) – and I knew that a Swissy was going to be a future dog in my family. The quest into breeders began, all in casualness as introducing another dog with Bender was most likely not going to happen (he was super particular about dogs he liked).  Continued to collect information, figuring that it would be a couple more years before we’d be adding a new dog into the mix. Unfortunately, the liver disease Bender was living with peaked and turned into liver failure in February, meaning the movement into a new dog was sooner than anticipated. An application was filled out, we’re on the list for a Swissy!

What about a mutt? I love mutts! Both Mick & Axel were mutts! With waiting until the summer to add a dog into our family I have only been looking lightly at available dogs.

If I adopt here are the places I’d adopt from:

That’s only a small amount of the rescues in Minnesota! Most likely Tri County Humane Society would be my first pick as they are in St. Cloud.  If you want to add a new family member to your home, I would def check out a local rescue!

What would be your choice for a breed of dog?

This is a blog circle and will drop every Friday! Next up visit Carol Mudra of Apawture Studios in Milan, Italy as she shares some fun info on one of her favorite American dog breeds, the Catahoula Leopard Dog.

Springing into March

It’s been a span of time since we last chatted. October trended its colors to bare leaves, Halloween led the way into the holiday season.

Thanksgiving was quaint, Kris & I hosted my family at our house. The regular fixings plus vegan options (vegan pumpkin pie made by me!) and we were all stuffed plum full. Christmas and December were busy – from decking the halls to snowboarding, a session with a husky pup and all of the events with Atomic Collars. The month whooshed by wrapping up with a very cold home fireworks show and staying up until the new year arrived.

No resolutions formally proclaimed for this year, though I’d like to get back into better management of my weight and health.

January continued, mostly frozen with the gaps being snagged for snowboarding but mostly bunkering down and being as warm as possible. This is the first winter season of helping out my mom and the morning drive from home to their house has been fairly decent, mostly cold more than treacherous. Sewing and doing tons of research into vintage waffle irons (also vintage stoves and collecting vintage clips from newspapers for charms for dogs).

February was windy and cold. Bunkered down staying as warm as possible with some sparks of inspiration. Bender got sick the end of January, just after Valentines we put him to sleep. The house is currently dogless and feels weird. No walking buddy, no tail wags or snores. I decided with the current school schedule (helping out my mom in Paynesville from 7am to 4pm Monday – Friday) that adding a dog back into our house wasn’t ideal. When summer break rolls around, heck yes there will be a dog added!

Otherwise, been a bit checked out from photography and photography things. Last year was a bit of a dud for sessions, the tail end COVID and the return to normal were factors along with the uptick in Atomic Collars. Lately, just been a bit on the blah side of things, though looking forward to the incoming spring does have me inspired. I’ve decided to look at the past year as a reset for me, About A Dog Photography, business in general and to kick back into gear for the coming summer season.

New things are going to be happening for the upcoming year for About A Dog Photography:

  • Sessions may or may not get an adjustment – logistics being sorted now
  • Short & Sweet Sessions may be moved to available any time but may be limited to St. Cloud with the Twin Cities staying as specific limited dates. More details to be sorted out.
  • Weekday evening sessions will be available starting after the time change on the 13th, weekend sessions will be limited.
  • Make Manual Your B*tch course will be launched this summer!
  • NEW BOOK in the planning stage! “Dogs of the North Shore” will be happening this coming summer! Logistics are being planned, sessions may be taking place in early June. (If you are interested in being part of this book, email me at )

Remember I mentioned a session with a husky puppy? That is the adorable Dakota below! It’s crazy how much she looks like her older sister Parka!

We’ll stay in touch as the spring rolls into summer. If there’s any tips or questions you’re burning to know about photography, dogs, anything really, drop me a comment and I’ll aim for a blog post featuring it!

Rest in Peace Bender

Yesterday we sent you to the Rainbow Bridge. I miss you so much.

The past two weeks have been tough as the cronic liver disease you had flared and your liver started to fail. You fought as best you could and you’re now in a happy, healthy place, wrestling, playing and hanging out with Icey, Mick, Axel and all of those who were at the Rainbow Bridge before you. Chase the squirrels, chew all the bones, take all the naps my sweet pibble.

Bender’s story started in with a visit to Hawk Creek Humane Society on February 11th 2011.

Strolled the kennels and was struck by a cool shepherd mix named Dax and a mega adorable brown and white pittie named Bender. Bender was a stray who was running the streets with another dog. No info on his age or history. I fell in love with his ears and his sweet personality.

A couple of weeks passed and the shelter posted that he was starting to get a bit bummed out being in the shelter and was hanging out in the office. They were looking for someone to foster him. I volunteered & March 11 he arrived.

Bender joined the pack of Mick, Icey and Axel. At first he was a total lughead. He listened casually, liked the gang, napped and took treats but didn’t really click with me. Until one day when a lightbulb turned on and he realized I wasn’t too shabby of a lady. From there I knew he belonged to our pack. When he was due for his shots the following year, we could do them and negate the adoption fee or bring him in for shots and bring him back to the shelter. We opted for the shots and Bender formally was ours.

He and Axel were the bestest buds, running, chasing and wrestling together until an argument involved teeth and they were put on crate and rotate. This continued for years until Kris and I got our house – Bender came with us and Axel stayed with my parents.

Bender was sweet, spunky and chill. He snored like an old man, would sneeze then bark at us if he wanted to chew his bone or occasionally if he needed to poop. He loved walks and smelling all the smells was one of his favorite things. He wasn’t fond of other dogs, rain or water and always had something to say to the mailman and delivery guy, occasionally the people strolling past the house. He enjoyed cucumbers, carrots, radishes, blueberries, lettuces, spinach, and all kinds of snacky foods. Walks were his jam as were car rides. He napped like a cat and LOVED to bake in the sunshine. He was gentle when he took treats, though his treat face was a little intimidating.

He was deeply loved and is greatly missed. Rest well my sweet pittie. I love you Bender.

The Last Monday of the Month!

Indeed! We are upon a Monday, 1 week before the goblins and ghouls will turn to the streets, chanting trick or treat!

The weather has maintained mild, though the trees have mostly shed all of their lovely colored leaves. We camped in Sibley State Park this weekend and most of the trees were rather naked, with a few stands of birches blazing strong with bold, yet thinning, yellows.

The map shows…

PAST PEAK! Minus that Minneapolis & St. Paul are holding on to their colors, though by the end of the week they too may be in the past peak realm.

That doesn’t mean fall is at its end! (in fact it doesn’t actually end until December 20th!). Bare trees aren’t nearly as pretty as leaved trees, but pines will keep their colors and provide a fall into winter backdrop. Grasses are in golds, a perfect compliment to the golden hour of light. Fallen leaves are not only fun to jump into or kick about, but they provide a touch of color that reads fall.

Sunset is around 6 pm for the rest of the month and a week after Halloween we hit the TIME CHANGE! We “fall back” an hour, which means sunset will now be few minutes shy of 5 pm! (And it continues to shorten, with sunset at 4:33  pm by the end of November!).

Good to know when you’re looking to plan a session prior to the holiday season. Classically, your session will take place 1.5 hours prior to sunset. Which means by the end of November we’re meeting up at 3 pm to start your session!

Time will continue to decrease (December 5th to 14th we will be at our shortest days with sunset at 4:31 pm) until we hit the winter solstice and begin to gain light minutes by minutes. The end of December has gained 10 minutes of light! We start the new year with a sunset time of 4:41 pm!

If you do want to schedule a session for the fall / winter season there are limited dates available:

November:

  • Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th / Last chance to get prints & products in time for Christmas!
  • Saturday November 27th & 28th **

December:

  • Sunday 12th **
  • Winter Break! Monday 27th – Thursday the 30th

January:

  • Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th
  • Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd

February:

  • Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th
  • Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th

March:

  • Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th
  • Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th
  • TIME CHANGE 14th! Weekday sessions resume!

(** = dates could change in availability according to winter markets & Atomic Collars!)

Today is: Sourest Day and National Greasy Food Day!

Enjoy the week and the lovely weather to come! Stroll in the balmy weather, and spook out your house for Halloween. See you later this week!

Mid month Friday!

Fall seems to have happily arrived, with temps starting brisk in the morning and warming into classic sweater weather. The leaves have been in ample changes, with some trees now in the nude or half dressed, the wind and rain aiding in their undress, while other trees are slow on getting the memo.

Last weekend I was out antiquing and thrifting with the lovely Jen of This Woman Wanders (she’s from Maryland!).  The colors were quite stunning on our drive from Monticello to Buffalo. We found lots of awesome finds (cast iron, cook books and egg beaters for me!) and had a laughing great time.

Speaking of fall colors… here’s where we’re at as of today:

Ladies and gents, we’re in the last bits of color for St. Cloud & Minneapolis, while St. Paul should be in a very happy place of color being at 50%-75% of peak color.  The southern most area of the state should be rather pretty especially on the Wisconsin & Minnesota border.

Get out and stroll with your pupper and enjoy the last bits of color as we head deeper into the fall. 60s for this weekend and 70s for the early part of next week!

Now one of the cast iron pieces I snagged last weekend was a… waffle iron! Cue all the archiving of all the vintage waffle recipes!

Did you know that like doughnuts, waffles are classified as breads?!?! Crazy! Often found in the quick breads sections (no yeast involved) waffles are crisp, plump and perfect for holding assorted syrups in those classic square divots. Their close cousins are pancakes (aka griddle cakes) though the batters aren’t evenly interchanged. And waffles have ancient lineage going way way back to the Romans! (Roman waffles weren’t called waffles and were much thinner but they were the start of the evolution.)

How do you like your waffles?
Blueberry for me! Or smothered in a blueberry syrup or a classic maple syrup. MMMMMM!
(I’m def team waffles vs pancakes!)

In archiving 57 vintage waffle recipes and counting, I began to wonder if dogs could eat waffles and if there were dog friendly waffle recipes. Yes and yes! Dogs can eat any basic waffle as long as the batter doesn’t have nutmeg or chocolate within. Additionally, most waffle recipes have small amounts of sugar and the ingredients are mostly healthy (if your pup has allergies, swap out flours etc). All the waffles for all the dogs!
