52 Week Project | Low Angle

This week’s theme was low angle. Originally the plan involved a very cold spring fed lake and a dock jumping boxer mix (yup that would be Axle), but I feared I would lose appendages from the cold and I wasn’t sure how deep the water was (camera + water isn’t a good thing).

There was an inkling that I may have to pass on this week’s theme. But wait….

A session on a sunshine filled day in a GINORMOUS park with a pair of awesome pups – Suzi the puggle & Ellie the shar pei – gave me the perfect low angle image. Suzi, the master head tilter treat scarfer, army crawling her way to me and my crinkly bag of treats and the perfect low angle image was captured.

Wait for it….

And because she is mega adorable, here’s a bonus sneak peak of Suzi!

52 Week Project | Blue

“I’m blue da ba dee da ba daa…” the very first thing that popped into my head when the newest theme for the 52 Week Project was announce. Yup, you guessed it the theme is blue! (The song is Blue by Eiffel 65 <– the animation…. oofda!)

With the song on endless repeat in my noggin, I loaded up Bender in a quest to find blue. I made note of two buildings with blue, a blue vintage car, a blue tractor and an assortment of blue houses.  There is an awesome collection of blue and white striped buildings in a neighboring small town, but they are on private property. Not wanting to be a bother, Bender and I made a swift turn around and headed back towards home.

First stop, the first blue building I had seen… Napa Auto Parts! The ENTIRE building is blue!

Second stop was a block or so away, a building that might have been a car repair or plumbing place in its past (I don’t recall which it was for as often as I drove past it). Its currently being remodeled on the inside, but the back of the building has blue and white stripes! Bender worked his indifferent modeling (he really does have ears), while I cozied up with some creeping charlie. Since Bender tends to walk towards me if he’s not tied to anything, I tied him to the rail on the building. Makes me wonder if anyone inside heard any of the thumps and clinks from the leash haha!

52 Week Project | Framed

This week’s theme for the pet photography 52 Week Project was Framed.

First my brain went  to the movie Who framed Roger Rabbit but I wasn’t sure either Axle or Bender could pull off Roger, let alone Jessica Rabbit! Haha!

The second idea went to Axle pouting in a jailbird outfit, perhaps with a sign that said “I was framed…” With no jailbird attire, it stayed an idea. Perhaps in the future…

From there I mulled a bit, leaning towards using a playground and using the shapes to frame one of the boys. Huzzah! I remembered I had a frame that was missing glass and I could literally frame my subject with it. Had to get a little crafty to figure out a way to get it to stand (spray paint cans behind it) then Bender and I headed out towards the lake.

Our first stop was the carp trap/dam. There’s a spiffy walking/biking trail that weaves its way around the lake and at the carp trap it has a quaint new walking bridge spanning the water. Tied up Bender, set up the frame and laid down on the bridge. Then waited for Bender to move into position, repositioned myself to frame him. The results.

My ingenuity was great for holding up the frame, but it meant I had a bit more magic to do to the images…

We loaded up and continued to wrap around the lake to the park where we had seen the dragons and dinosaurs. They were nowhere to be found, only the grounds keeper and his zippy riding lawnmower. Since there wasn’t any worry of a passing t-rex or triceratops, we made our way to the playground. It snowed and rained the past couple of days, so the ground was boggy, but the playground was dry.

We meandered down to the lake, were intrigued by a pair of Canada geese, attempted a couple framed images, but the breeze off the lake thought the frame was best knocked to the ground. We dipped our feet in the water (ok Bender did, still a bit too cold for me), then loaded back up into the car to meander home, windows down, wind styling our hair and ears.

52 Week Project | Low Key

This week’s theme for the 52 Week Project was low key. This type of photography features more dark tones and colors than high key images. Low key images often have a feeling of drama and mystery to them from the reduced lighting.

This week the cats were the models. Miss Lilly (who is easily fascinated by moving light) the tabby and white cat and the adorable grey and white Tootsie. Without an umbrella and more powerful speed light that is often used in low key photography, I opted for some very bright middle of the day light from the window by my desk.

52 Week Project | Fantasy

This week’s theme was fantasy. My brain went DINOSAURS! And a really neat wooded area that has a bit of a primordial feel to it. Alas the weather did not cooperate for the session with Happy & Toby due to a rain delay. Buggers.

A couple days passed, the rainy weather cleared a bit so Bender & I adventured around the lake. We stopped at the carp trap but it wasn’t quite the place to lend towards a fantasy look. We continued around the lake to the regional park. I took a slightly different road and we came across a dirt hill that looked like it could be home to a hobbit. No hobbits or hobbit doors were found.

What was that noise?

Just a passing T. Rex! He gave a growl, but continued on his way. We’re glad he didn’t stop for a longer pause or a mid morning snack! He tromped off and when the sound of him was gone I remembered to breath again! What a sight!

The birds kicked up their chatter, then there were some hearty squawks that were definitely not any birds native to Minnesota. What could they be?

A pair of weanling dragons – one red, one blue! They were small, so I assumed them to be pygmy dragons (standard dragons grow faster and would be about the size of Bender as a flying weanling – this is all based on some very deep mythology I have created for a story…). The red was the better flyer and was happy to give Bender some tips on flying, though I think Bender was thinking that these were the strangest birds he’s ever seen. When Bender and I didn’t seem too interested in the physics of flying, they departed with some shrill squawks into the nearby woods.

Bender and I too departed from the dirt hill and headed to the beach. Oofda that wind coming off the lake was very brisk. It was kicking up waves and some foam. Bender wasn’t thrilled about the waves (he doesn’t like water) and was regarding them with a less than thrilled opinion.

He nearly missed the small herd of brachiosauruses wading through the lake in his brooding. We watched them for a bit, then decided to head towards the warmth of home to not risk losing fingers or toes.
