What to wear your session – dog edition!

Hello dogs! Are you excited for your session? EEEEEEEEK! Me as well!

Let’s talk about what to wear for your session! (We’ll give you some recommendations to tell your hoomans too!)

Atomic Collars beat up collar

Old beat up collar – great for daily walks & jaunts through the mud & woods. Not great for your session!

What’s the difference between a neckerchief and a bandana?

Bandanas are a TRIANGLE shape. They can be tie on or have a snap closure system. Classically the knot will rotate as its being worn so the design will end up on your shoulders. (Don’t worry, we’ll tweak it into place for your pictures!). Neckerchiefs are a RECTANGLE shape, no point! They tie on and the knot becomes an adorable bow under your chin.

You can also opt for a bow tie, flower, or scarf (if you’re doing a winter session these are TOTALLY adorable!)  to show off your personality!

What should my hooman parents wear if they are in pictures with me?

First and foremost, make sure your hoomans wear clean, non beatup shoes. They WILL end up in pictures with you no matter what size you are. Also make sure they wear (or at least bring) comfortable shoes for when we walk from point to point during your session. It’s no fun for your mum or dad to be sore halfway through a trek in the woods.

There’s two ways you can coordinate their outfits – you pick your collar & accessories & they find matching items or they pick their outfits and find matching items for you. So if you fall in love with a shark bandana then your hooman parents would pick blues and greys to compliment.  Say your hoomans love mustard & navy like below:

Found on justpostedblog.com

Then you would match to their choice in colors with navy or mustard (or mustard & navy) bandana or neckerchiefs – see below for ideas! Heck you could even match your collar or harness to their outfits!

If your parents aren’t sure about mixing patterns, tell them it’s totally ok! Best bet is a pattern & solid together, or a floral pattern with a plaid. The ideal is to have their outfits in similar tones (all blues, greys, mustards etc) or in tones that compliment each other – navy goes well with coral, mustard, rust and turquoise. Pair soft pinks with sand, mint, lavender and pale blues. Blues and greens work wonderfully together, mustard pairs with cranberry, turquoise and purple work well together. If they stay in a tonality range (rich colors, pale colors, bright colors) the colors they pick ought to coordinate quite well. T-shirts are dandy too but make sure they don’t wear any t-shirts with graphics on them!

Tell your parents to anticipate the season we’re going to have your session in. Spring & fall can be warm, can be chilly, layering is going to be their friends. Summer speaks to lighter weight materials. If your mum or dad tends to sweat, tell them to avoid greys & lighter colors (minus white) if the humidity and temperature are on the upward trend. Darker colors (navy & black are best) will help hide any sweaty regions. In the winter the temp can be cold to really cold (we won’t do a session if the temp is under 20 degrees) and layering is a MUST! If they don’t have any classic coats that look sharp, then they will discard them for any images they are part of. Additionally tell them that proper footwear is a MUST!

What if my sister or brother (who are also dogs like me) want to be in the pictures?

Make sure they have a clean, non ratty collars or harnesses. If one of you wears a harness and the other doesn’t, it would be best that you BOTH wear a harness or BOTH wear a collar for images when you’re together. With bandanas & neckerchiefs, use the same rules as above – pull from your hoomans’ outfits, or inspire theirs. If you want to wear the same bandana or neckerchief for total matchy matchy, go for it! Otherwise pick a pair that coordinates – perhaps the same color but a different tone for each of you (it’s called monochrome!). A light blue & dark blue, hunter green & kelly green, etc. The same advice from above – pair a floral with a solid, a plaid & floral, different patterns but the same tone and so on. Consult Pinterest for ideas (don’t worry that most are people themed, you can follow the same coordination inspiration!). Avoid contrasting patterns or colors, we want to show a unity to your sibling, not a contest!

Oh you’re not really the matchy matchy type? Tell your hoomans to head to Pinterest for ideas for their outfits and save the bandanas & neckerchiefs for pictures featuring only you! Feel free to bring a couple of options if you like and we can mix and match in according to backdrop.

When should I go to the groomer?

If you’re a dog who regularly goes to the groomer, we should coordinate your session a few days after your groom so you look sharp & clean. If you’re a pup with longer eyebrows but aren’t due for a full groom, pop into the groomer for a trim. If you happen to need a full shave due to matting (it happens, we understand) we should opt for a session a few weeks afterwards so your coat can build up a bit.

If you’re a dog that’s a wash & wear type, opt for a bath the day before your session. Skipping the bath? A good brushing the day of your session before we meet up will be perfect.

Make sure your hoomans are groomed too! Have your dads trim their beards, goatees and mustaches. Both mom & dad should have their hair trimmed the week before we meet up if needed.

What should I make sure my mum or dad packs for the day?

POO BAGS!!! Make sure to have a roll ready and in available because sh*t happens.
Aside from poo bags, you will want to bring:

  • a bottle of water & bowl – especially if your session is during the late spring, summer and early fall seasons
  • your favorite HIGH value treats (make sure to let me know if you have any dietary restrictions!)
  • your favorite toy – we can include it in your images as a memento or just use it to get your attention
  • a change of bandanas / neckerchiefs or collars – we can do outfit swaps throughout your session

Perfect! You’re perfectly prepped on what to wear for your session!

Your dog’s personality has little to do with breed!

A new study launched recently and it confirms that your dog’s personality has little to do with their breed! (We all knew this already!)

“There is a huge amount of behavioral variation in every breed, and at the end of the day, every dog really is an individual,” said University of Massachusetts geneticist Elinor Karlsson, co author of the study. She mentions that dog owners love to talk about their dog’s personality (noted when she visited a New York dog park).  The enthusiasm sparked the inquiry into the extent of behavioral patterns are inherited. Are distinctive and predictable behaviors linked to breed?

The answer: Physical traits such as spots on a Dalmatian or the long lean legs of a Greyhound are clearly inherited, breed is not a strong predictor of an individual dog’s personality!

They gathered a massive amount of data from 18,385 dogs (49% purebred) and sequenced the DNA of 2155 dogs to look for patterns that indicated breed would lend towards certain behaviors.

They found, “Most behavioral traits are heritable [heritability (h2) > 25%], but behavior only subtly differentiates breeds. Breed offers little predictive value for individuals, explaining just 9% of variation in behavior. For more heritable, more breed-differentiated traits, like biddability (responsiveness to direction and commands), knowing breed ancestry can make behavioral predictions somewhat more accurate (see the figure). For less heritable, less breed-differentiated traits, like agonistic threshold (how easily a dog is provoked by frightening or uncomfortable stimuli), breed is almost uninformative.”

They found 11 regions in the genome that are significantly associated with behavior – howling & human sociability were inherited (makes sense as dogs were the first domesticated animal and have lived with humans for 20,000+ years…). But regions associated with behavior are not linked to breed! The study found that behavioral characteristics found in modern breeds are environmentally influenced (aka polygenic) and found with variable prevalence… in ALL breeds!

The thought is these behaviors marked as characteristic of modern breeds come from thousands years of environmentally influenced adaptation that predates modern breeds. There are some behavioral variances that are defined by dog breed (ie biddability) though overall breed is NOT a reliable predictor of individual behavior (such as agnostic threshold – which measure how easily a dog is provoked by frightening, uncomfortable, or annoying stimuli).

Thusly, most components of behavior & personality are not defined by breed!

If you want to read the study: Published Thursday April 28th in the journal of Science. (The featured image is from Darwins Ark related to the study!)

Do you think your dog’s breed defines his or her personality? Or not?

Springing into March

It’s been a span of time since we last chatted. October trended its colors to bare leaves, Halloween led the way into the holiday season.

Thanksgiving was quaint, Kris & I hosted my family at our house. The regular fixings plus vegan options (vegan pumpkin pie made by me!) and we were all stuffed plum full. Christmas and December were busy – from decking the halls to snowboarding, a session with a husky pup and all of the events with Atomic Collars. The month whooshed by wrapping up with a very cold home fireworks show and staying up until the new year arrived.

No resolutions formally proclaimed for this year, though I’d like to get back into better management of my weight and health.

January continued, mostly frozen with the gaps being snagged for snowboarding but mostly bunkering down and being as warm as possible. This is the first winter season of helping out my mom and the morning drive from home to their house has been fairly decent, mostly cold more than treacherous. Sewing and doing tons of research into vintage waffle irons (also vintage stoves and collecting vintage clips from newspapers for charms for dogs).

February was windy and cold. Bunkered down staying as warm as possible with some sparks of inspiration. Bender got sick the end of January, just after Valentines we put him to sleep. The house is currently dogless and feels weird. No walking buddy, no tail wags or snores. I decided with the current school schedule (helping out my mom in Paynesville from 7am to 4pm Monday – Friday) that adding a dog back into our house wasn’t ideal. When summer break rolls around, heck yes there will be a dog added!

Otherwise, been a bit checked out from photography and photography things. Last year was a bit of a dud for sessions, the tail end COVID and the return to normal were factors along with the uptick in Atomic Collars. Lately, just been a bit on the blah side of things, though looking forward to the incoming spring does have me inspired. I’ve decided to look at the past year as a reset for me, About A Dog Photography, business in general and to kick back into gear for the coming summer season.

New things are going to be happening for the upcoming year for About A Dog Photography:

  • Sessions may or may not get an adjustment – logistics being sorted now
  • Short & Sweet Sessions may be moved to available any time but may be limited to St. Cloud with the Twin Cities staying as specific limited dates. More details to be sorted out.
  • Weekday evening sessions will be available starting after the time change on the 13th, weekend sessions will be limited.
  • Make Manual Your B*tch course will be launched this summer!
  • NEW BOOK in the planning stage! “Dogs of the North Shore” will be happening this coming summer! Logistics are being planned, sessions may be taking place in early June. (If you are interested in being part of this book, email me at )

Remember I mentioned a session with a husky puppy? That is the adorable Dakota below! It’s crazy how much she looks like her older sister Parka!

We’ll stay in touch as the spring rolls into summer. If there’s any tips or questions you’re burning to know about photography, dogs, anything really, drop me a comment and I’ll aim for a blog post featuring it!

Rest in Peace Bender

Yesterday we sent you to the Rainbow Bridge. I miss you so much.

The past two weeks have been tough as the cronic liver disease you had flared and your liver started to fail. You fought as best you could and you’re now in a happy, healthy place, wrestling, playing and hanging out with Icey, Mick, Axel and all of those who were at the Rainbow Bridge before you. Chase the squirrels, chew all the bones, take all the naps my sweet pibble.

Bender’s story started in with a visit to Hawk Creek Humane Society on February 11th 2011.

Strolled the kennels and was struck by a cool shepherd mix named Dax and a mega adorable brown and white pittie named Bender. Bender was a stray who was running the streets with another dog. No info on his age or history. I fell in love with his ears and his sweet personality.

A couple of weeks passed and the shelter posted that he was starting to get a bit bummed out being in the shelter and was hanging out in the office. They were looking for someone to foster him. I volunteered & March 11 he arrived.

Bender joined the pack of Mick, Icey and Axel. At first he was a total lughead. He listened casually, liked the gang, napped and took treats but didn’t really click with me. Until one day when a lightbulb turned on and he realized I wasn’t too shabby of a lady. From there I knew he belonged to our pack. When he was due for his shots the following year, we could do them and negate the adoption fee or bring him in for shots and bring him back to the shelter. We opted for the shots and Bender formally was ours.

He and Axel were the bestest buds, running, chasing and wrestling together until an argument involved teeth and they were put on crate and rotate. This continued for years until Kris and I got our house – Bender came with us and Axel stayed with my parents.

Bender was sweet, spunky and chill. He snored like an old man, would sneeze then bark at us if he wanted to chew his bone or occasionally if he needed to poop. He loved walks and smelling all the smells was one of his favorite things. He wasn’t fond of other dogs, rain or water and always had something to say to the mailman and delivery guy, occasionally the people strolling past the house. He enjoyed cucumbers, carrots, radishes, blueberries, lettuces, spinach, and all kinds of snacky foods. Walks were his jam as were car rides. He napped like a cat and LOVED to bake in the sunshine. He was gentle when he took treats, though his treat face was a little intimidating.

He was deeply loved and is greatly missed. Rest well my sweet pittie. I love you Bender.

The End of Summer

Whoosh.
Summer came, it heated up, served us ice cream and swimming outings, parades and fireworks and rolled into lazy dog days. Now its lazily waning as school supplies and Halloween display in the stores, the early leaves are transitioning and children anticipate school.

This was one of those summers where it went streaking by too quickly.

Mondays at the part time gig of the camera shop, weekdays sewing as a madman for Atomic Collars, every other weekend at the Minneapolis Pet Market hanging out with other awesome pet vendors, every opposite weekend filled with adventure and my two favorite guys. There was a trip to a cabin and a long weekend for my birthday.  Then the summer was gone.

Photography has been quiet. The oomph of steam that had the birthday excitement petered out when there was a loss of time (coordinated around the cabin trip, might want to rethink that…) and I lost the organization to pick winners as well as release the contests for all 8 sessions. Part was due to the amplification of Atomic Collars. Sewing = time. With more sewing to do to create stock, it ate into marketing and social media for About A Dog Photography.

Don’t worry, we aren’t going anywhere. We made it to 9 years, can’t stop us now!

With back to school happening soon there will be an adjustment made. I’m helping my mom out during the weekdays so Monday-Thursday won’t be available until after 5 pm. Fridays are out as that’s a pizza night and hangout day. This will hold steady until we reach then end of September when our start time is 5:30 pm (we meet up an hour and half before sunset for the best light).

Now if we need to, we can shorten the session to an hour and shoot until we lose light. This would give us weekdays until  October 18th with a start time of 5:30, sunset at 6:25 pm. Any weekdays after the 18th of October will be only available as a short session due to the loss of light as the season transitions. This will remain in effect for weekdays until the time change in March.

Select weekends will be available pending events with Atomic Collars. At the moment the weekends of September 18th & 19th, October 3rd, 16th-17th, October 30th and November 13th-14th are available.  If you want a session then, call dibs ASAP!

Peak fall leaf color is typically late September to mid October for the middle of the state aka St. Cloud area. The Twin Cities tends to have a later start and later range, with leaves turning in late September and transitioning into late October, while the North Shore is going to peak in September (waterfalls and leaves? yes please! Though water levels are low this year…

The week of October 11th-18th ought to have a fair display of color for the St. Cloud area, possibly for the Twin Cities (we know there’s tons of variables) and I’ll be doing active weekly reporting of the colors starting in September. If you want a session during that week, email me ASAP!  Only 5 weekdays that week are available for full sessions!

The weekend of November 13th-14th is the VERY LAST weekend to book a session to guarantee you receive your prints, albums etc in time for Christmas. Yes we can have sessions in December but you won’t get your prints and products in time for Christmas. Print and product production is 3-4 weeks, especially around the holiday season.

From January to March 12th there will be no weekday sessions and only select weekends available. At the moment January 22nd & 23rd, February 5th & 6th, February 19th & 20th, March 5th & 6th are available.

Starting the week of March 14th we can resume weekday sessions! Start time would be 6 pm and as the spring heads into summer start times will get a bit later. When we hit the end of school in June, weekdays will be fully available for morning and evening sessions, with select weekends available.

Can’t forget about Viewing Sessions! These will only be available in the evenings after 5 pm weekdays and can be done in person or virtually via Skype from the start of the school year until summer break. Summer will give us more flexibility, but Viewing Sessions will always be on a weekday, whether in the morning, afternoon or evening.

Now you’re in the loop! Starting in September there were will be weekly blogs featuring a report on fall leaf colors. I may add some other fun dog things – recipes, dog facts, possibly adorable pictures of pups.

Keep staying safe in this new normal world. Hugs from me and sniffs from Bender. (Kris says hi too!) ♥
