What to Wear for Your Dog Photography Session (And Look Amazing Next to Your Pup!)

EEEKK! You’re getting ready for your dog’s session. You open your closet and think…
“What in tarnation should I wear for my dog’s photoshoot?”

Before wardrobe panic sets in, here are some simple tips to help you choose the perfect outfit for your dog photography session:

Start with your footwear!

Yup, before you consider your outfit, think of what you’ll be wearing as we stroll for your session – shoes!

Make sure they’re clean and not worn out (perfect excuse for new shoes!). Comfort is key, but if you want to rock those stunning showstoppers, bring them along and swap into them when we pause.

Cute + comfort is the ideal.

PS – shoes are a great way to add a pop of bold colors.

Stick to simple, coordinated colors

Nix the neons! Opt for colors that coordinate with each other and the season — cooler shades for spring, bright pops for summer, and rich, warm tones for fall and winter.

If the whole family is joining, skip matchy-matchy outfits. Instead, aim for palettes that harmonize nicely together.

Here are some great ways to coordinate colors:

  •  Monochromatic – different shades and textures of a single color
  • Neutral – the range from cream to charcoal
  • Warm tones – yellow, orange, red, brown, cream
  • Cool tones – blue, green, purple, grey (though some are warm, same with black)
  • Analogous – three colors next to each other on the color wheel
    • Blue + green + purple
    • Green + blue + yellow
    • Yellow + orange + red
    • Red + orange + purple

Pick patterns wisely

Patterns can be complex when it comes to photography.

  • wide plaids: great
  • florals: epic
  • stripes: meh
  • small plaids (“dad plaids”): can work but often look busy

General rule: Avoid small, intricate patterns.

For example, if your favorite blouse has teeny bulldogs all over it, it probably won’t photograph well as a main piece. If you really love it, layer it under a denim jacket, vest, or blazer to turn it into a fun, subtle pop.

Textures & layers add interest

Textures instantly make outfits more interesting! Think cozy knit sweaters, cardigans, or a fun scarf. Bonus points if your pup has a matching scarf — how cute would that be?

Layers are also your secret weapon. Start with a vest or jacket for one look, then remove it for a second outfit without a full wardrobe change. Simple, stylish, and totally photo-ready!

Add seasonal pizzaz!

Accessories are a fun way to bring a touch of the season to your outfit — and they give you easy variety for your session! We can add or remove pieces to create different looks without a full outfit change.

Seasonal accessory ideas:

  • Autumn: hats, boots, scarves
  • Winter: stylish jackets, gloves, winter hats
  • Spring / summer: light jackets, summer hats

Don't forget location!

Where we’re shooting makes a big difference in outfit planning! Are we in nature or an urban setting? What time of year is it? These details will help you pick the perfect look.

Spring & summer have more greens with pops of flowers, which means green & olive likely will blend with the background. But swing to the fall & winter tones and green & olive will be classic. Summer colors will likely clash against bold leaves and cozy browns of fall & winter, though they’ll be stunning earlier in the year.

Practical tip for nature sessions: If we’ll be “off road,” consider skipping dresses or skirts — leg scratches don’t photograph well! Also, think about whether you’re comfortable sitting or kneeling in your outfit while posing with your pup.

For urban sessions: If we’re incorporating murals or city streets, neutrals (cream to charcoal) are your best friend. They won’t clash with brick, colored walls, or busy patterns, and they keep the focus on you and your dog.
