52 Week Project | Bokeh

The theme for this week’s 52 week project was Bokeh.

Bokeh comes from the Japanese word boke (ボケ), which means “blur” or “haze”, or boke-aji, the “blur quality.” Bokeh is pronounced BOH-Kə or BOH-kay. Bokeh is defined as “the effect of a soft out-of-focus background that you get when shooting a subject, using a fast lens, at the widest aperture, such as f/2.8 or wider.” Simply put, bokeh is the pleasing or aesthetic quality of out-of-focus blur in a photograph.

I decided that I was going to aim for “sparkly” bokeh that happens at  the wider end of the lens spectrum vs the smooth bokeh from a longer telephoto. Both boys got to play models, while the only tree in the yard acted as the perfect filter for “sparkly” bokeh.

Bender was first, around 4pm.

A couple hours later around 7pm Axle showed off his modeling skills. That drool….

Then…. EEEEEEK! A package arrived on Wednesday, its contents a brand spanking new LENS from Sigma! The 135mm f1.8 lens in fact! Did some tester type shots with Bender and the bokeh – mmmm dreamy! Much different than the “sparkly” bokeh from a wider angle lens.

Next up visit Danyel with Wag To My Heart Serving the Portland Metro area, OR to see how she captured bokeh!

  1. Your boys are always so cooperative! I love that you tossed them both something in your last photo. That 135mm gave you a great, creamy background! I love getting a new lens!

  2. Love your variety – as always you do a great job with that!!! The boys were perfect models. Wonderful expressions and pretty bokeh! Enjoy that new lens! So exciting!

  3. Love the results with the new lens, it is so dreamy! Is it an Art lens? I especially like the images with the sun bursting around Axels head!

    1. The images with the sunburst are with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. The very last set with Bender are with the Sigma 135mm and yes it is an art lens!

  4. Definitely exciting to get a new lens! I love the idea of shooting the dog from the back and just having his ears standing up and the back of the head. I think you have some ‘comic’ expressions in these photos.

  5. Perfect timing on the new lens. I think my favorite image is the one looking up at Bender’s mouth where he looks like he is smiling.

  6. How exciting to get that new lens, and what a perfect project to play around with it! I’m sure you’re going to have loads of fun with that baby!

The one of Bender’s face as the treat is flying at him…priceless.
